FALLING HAIR

Does your hair fall a lot? Don't worry, you're not alone. Millions of people from all around the world suffer from dry, brittle and weak hair. Some of the possible reasons for falling hair are:

Tension
Too much work
Illness
Poor diet
Over-exposure to the sun
Perming
Amateur bleaching
Too frequent and inexpert use of tints, rinses or other colourants

Here is what you can do to prevent hair fall

Shampoo regularly. Remember, a CLEAN scalp is a HEALTHY SCALP.

Brahmi amla oil also promotes hair growth.

A high protein diet with plenty of fruits, green vegetables and dairy products is a must.

Drink 10-12 glass of water everyday.

Use a very mild shampoo and condition your hair at least twice a week. When you do, make sure you rinse out the conditioner thoroughly, otherwise residue build-up will cause your hair to look limp and dull.

Know your vitamins! IRON is important for healthy hair and brittle, limp hair indicates an iron deficiency. Spinach has a good iron content, so gulp it down!

ZINC helps prevent hair loss and greying. Eat adequate zinc rich foods. Overweight people tend to have zinc deficiency, which is inversely related to the body mass index. Thus if you are overweight and if your hair falls too much, you may want to increase your intake of zinc containing foods. Recipes containing stone ground, wholegrain flour are rich in zinc.

A shortfall in VITAMIN B may cause dandruff, falling hair, loss of colour and could encourage grey hair. So B group Vitamins are essential for gloss, colour and thickness.

VITAMIN C ensures the health of capillaries supplying blood to hair follicles. Make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and veggies.

VITAMIN E encourages hair growth. Switch from refined flours to wholemeal and wheatgerm, eggs, vegetable oil.

COPPER stops hair from falling. Studies show that the copper content in the blood serum of people with falling hair is less than normal. Different types of alopecia (falling hair) are seen to have a deficiency of this important trace element. Include small quantities of nuts, especially cashews and peanuts, seeds, whole milk and beans in your diet as these contain minute but important amounts of copper.

Homemade remedies for preventing hair fall:
Apply almond oil on scalp and massage.
Grind fenugreek seeds in water and apply on your scalp. Wash off after 40 minutes. Do this every morning for a month ¡V if it suits you! Remember, different treatments suit different types of hair.
Massage warm castor oil + almond oil into your scalp gently. Wrap a hot towel around your scalp so it gets absorbed into the hair. Do this twice a week for healthy, shiny hair.
Add 2-3 drops of honey to a glass of water and use this as the last rinse after shampooing.

Quick Hair Care Conditioner

Mix 1 egg, 2 tbs castor oil, 1 tsp vinegar and 1 tsp glycerine. Beat until frothy and massage lightly into your scalp. Wrap your head in a hot towel, steam, then wash off. This conditioner makes hair thicker, shiny, soft and manageable.

Honey Conditioner

Beat 1-2 eggs (depending on the length of the hair), 1 tsp honey and 2 tsp olive oil. Massage gently into the scalp. Steam, and shampoo after an hour.

Alcohol Conditioner

Beat 1-2 eggs with 2 tsp brandy. Massage into your scalp. Leave for 10-15 mins. Rinse well. The egg nourishes your hair and brandy stimulates hair growth.

Your hair is a vital beauty asset, requiring constant loving care. And with a little nurturing, lush, glossy hair will be yours

ESSENTIALS FOR FALLING HAIR -

Does your hair fall often Arm yourself with these tools to combat hair fall.

Wide-toothed comb

Get yourself a wide-toothed comb. This is probably one of the most important yet underutilized of all hair tools. A wide-toothed comb helps you distribute conditioner evenly all over your hair while shampooing and conditioning. In addition, it also helps get rid of knots smoothly.

The best time to get rid of knots is during conditioning. Apply conditioner and run a wide toothed comb gently through your hair.

While untangling dry hair, do so in sections. Take one section at a time, and first, untangle the ends of your hair. Do so slowly, and don?t pull unless you want your hair to fall out in clumps or break.

Don?t wait for the last minute before detangling your hair. Every night, while sitting in front of the television, run a wide toothed comb gently through your hair, until you have untangled it completely. Do this every night, and you will notice that your hair remains free from tangles.

Leave-in conditioner
Dry hair tends to tangle easily, and, needless to say, causes it to break. Make sure your hair is never devoid of moisture by always keeping a bottle of leave-in conditioner handy. The next time you feel your hair is dry and rough to the touch, simply rub a dollop of leave-in conditioner between your palms, and apply it to your hair. Comb through with your wide toothed comb. Your hair will be instantly rejuvenated and moisturized. Gradually, the texture will also improve. This is a must if you blow dry your hair regularly, or if it is chemically treated. Such hair constantly craves moisture, so get yourself a bottle of leave-in conditioner.

Oil
Olive, almond and coconut oils are all excellent for the hair. While you could apply oil as an alternative to leave-in conditioner, oil tends to make your hair sticky, and you cannot style your hair well after applying oil. Your only alternative would then be to tie up your hair. For better results with oil, apply just a few drops immediately after washing your hair, when your hair is still dripping wet. Oil doesn?t penetrate the strands as easily as leave-in conditioner does though. Nothing beats a hot oil massage followed by a steam treatment, as the steam helps the oil penetrate the hair strands, strengthening them and curtailing hair fall.

Egg
Egg is great for the hair ? there are no two ways about it! True, it causes a tremendous stink in the bathroom, and your hair may let off an ?eggy? smell, but the results are instantaneous and worth it! Egg strengthens your hair almost immediately, and the egg yolk leaves your hair shining. Whip an egg with two tablespoons of olive oil and apply it to your hair. Wash off after half an hour. Make sure you wash off with cold water though, or the egg will start cooking in your hair, and would be harder to take off! Use a scented shampoo to counter the smell of egg in your hair, and follow up with a leave-in conditioner. Do this for a month, and you will be amazed by the change in your hair texture and the reduction in hair fall

Top 10 diet myths

Need to lose weight? Before you give up the late night munching and go on a no-fat detox frenzy to kick your sluggish metabolism into shape, read what the experts have to say about these popular dieting myths.

Myth 1

Myth

Low-fat or no-fat diets are good for you.

Fact

Leading dietician Lyndel Costain says: 'People tend to think they need a low-fat diet to lose weight, but you should still have a third of your calories coming from fat.'
The body needs fat for energy, tissue repair and to transport vitamins A, D, E and K around the body.
Lyndel Costain adds: 'As a guideline, women need 70g of fat a day (95g for men) with 30g as the minimum (40g for men).
'There's no need to follow a fat-free diet. Cutting down on saturated fats and eating unsaturated fats, found in things like olive oil and avocados, will help.'

Myth 2

Myth

Crash dieting or fasting makes you lose weight.

Fact

This may be true in the short term, but ultimately it can hinder weight loss.
Claire MacEvilly, a nutritionist at the MRC Human Nutrition Research Centre in Cambridge, explains: 'Losing weight over the long term burns off fat. Crash dieting or fasting not only removes fat but also lean muscle and tissue.'
The loss of lean muscle causes a fall in your basal metabolic rate – the amount of calories your body needs on a daily basis.
This means your body will need fewer calories than it did previously, making weight gain more likely once you stop dieting.
It's also why exercise is recommended in any weight-loss plan to build muscle and maintain your metabolic rate.
Claire MacEvilly adds: 'Fasting can also make you feel dizzy or weak so it's much better to try long-term weight loss.'

Myth 3

Myth

Food eaten late at night is more fattening.

Fact

Many diets tell you not to eat after a certain time in the evening. They say the body will store more fat because it is not burned off with any activity.
A study at the Dunn Nutrition Centre in Cambridge suggests otherwise.
Volunteers were placed in a whole body calorimeter, which measures calories burned and stored.
They were fed with a large lunch and small evening meal for one test period, then a small lunch and large evening meal during a second test period.
The results revealed the large meal eaten late at night did not make the body store more fat.
It's not when you eat that's important, but the total amount you consume in a 24-hour period.
Lyndel Costain adds: 'It is true that people who skip meals during the day, then eat loads in the evening are more likely to be overweight than those who eat regularly throughout the day.
'This may be because eating regular meals helps people regulate their appetite and overall food intake.'

Myth 4

Myth

A slow metabolism prevents weight loss.

Fact

This is a common myth among dieters who are struggling to lose weight.
Studies have shown that resting metabolism - the number of calories used by the body at rest – increases as people become fatter.
In other words, the larger you are, the more calories you need to keep your body going and the higher your metabolism.
Clare Grace, research dietitian at the Queen Mary University of London, says: 'Weight gain occurs when the number of calories eaten is greater than the number used up by the body.
'Unfortunately, people are becoming increasingly sedentary, burning off less and less calories, and it seems likely this is a crucial factor in the increasing numbers struggling to control their weight.'

Myth 5

Myth

Fattening foods equal rapid weight gain.

Fact

Believe it or not, true weight gain is a slow process. You need to eat an extra 3500 calories to gain one pound of body fat (and vice versa for losing it).
Lyndel Costain explains: 'If the scales say you've gained a few pounds after a meal out, it's largely due to fluid, which will resolve itself – as long as you don't get fed up, and keep overeating!
'A lot of people feel guilty and think they've blown their diet if they eat rich foods. But, how can a 50g chocolate bar make you instantly put on pounds?
'For long-term weight control, balance high-fat foods with healthy food and activity.'

Myth 6

Myth

Low-fat milk has less calcium than full-fat milk.

Fact

Skimmed and semi-skimmed milk actually have more calcium, says dietician Alison Sullivan, because the calcium is in the watery part, not the creamy part.
She says: 'If you're trying to lose weight and cut fat from your diet, skimmed milk is your best bet because it is lower in fat and has 10mg more calcium per 200ml milk than full fat.
'Semi-skimmed is best for maintaining a healthy lifestyle if you're not dieting.
'Full-fat milk is best for children and adults who are underweight.'

Myth 7

Myth

Low-fat foods help you lose weight.

Fact

'Low-fat' or 'fat-free' doesn't necessarily mean low calorie or calorie-free, warns Lyndel Costain.
Check the calorie content of foods, especially cakes, biscuits, crisps, ice creams and ready meals.
Extra sugars and thickeners are often added to boost flavour and texture, so calorie content may be only a bit less, or similar to standard products.
Foods labelled low-fat should contain no more than 3g fat per 100g.
'Watching the quantity is important,' adds nutritionist Alison Sullivan. 'People tend to have half-fat spread but then use twice as much.
'And things like fruit pastilles may be low in fat, but are high in sugar which turns to fat.
'With low fat foods, look to see where else the calories might come from.'

Myth 8

Myth

Cholesterol is bad for you.

Fact

Cholesterol is a fatty substance that is made mostly by the liver.
It can be bad for us, because it forms deposits that line and clog our arteries. Clogged arteries contribute to heart disease.
But we all need some blood cholesterol because it's used to build cells and make vital hormones – and there's good and bad cholesterol.
Lyndel Costain explains: 'Saturated fats found in food like meat, cheese, cream, butter and processed pastries tend to raise low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, known as 'bad' cholesterol, which delivers cholesterol to the arteries.
'High density lipoprotein (HDL), or 'good' cholesterol, transports cholesterol away from the arteries, back to the liver.'
So choose unsaturated fats such as vegetable oils, nuts and seeds.

Myth 9

Banana myth

Many people believe bananas are fattening.
Bananas are low in fat and are packed with potassium.
There is only 0.5g fat and 95 calories in a banana.

Myth

Vegetarians can't build muscle.

Fact

Vegetarians can be as muscular as meat eaters by getting their protein from vegetable sources such as cheese, nuts, pulses and grains.
Claire MacEvilly says: 'You need protein to build muscle, but too much can lead to long-term side effects.
'The body can only store a certain amount of protein, so too much can damage the kidney.
'The Department of Health recommends that 50 per cent of energy should come from carbohydrates, 35 per cent from fat and the remaining 15 per cent from protein.'

Myth 10

Myth

You always gain weight when you stop smoking.

Fact

Some people gain weight when they stop smoking, some lose weight and some stay the same.
While nicotine does increase the body's metabolism, its effect is small. It's far healthier to be an overweight non-smoker than not bother giving up because you think you'll put on weight.
Alison Sullivan says: 'Where people tend to fall down is when they replace a cigarette with comfort food.
'Chewing sugar-free gum or snacking on vegetable strips kept in the fridge is a good idea because you can have these instead of reaching for the biscuit tin.
'And something like a satsuma keeps your hands occupied until the craving goes away.'

Pearly white teeth

When it comes to making a good first impression, it helps if you smile and show a lovely set of pearly white teeth.
The good news is that tooth decay in all adults has steadily decreased in the UK since the 1970s, according to the latest Adult Dental Health Survey (2009).
The bad news is that many people are still so unhappy about their teeth that they avoid smiling and eating in public.

An attractive smile

'Recent years have seen an increasing interest from patients in having a smile that isn't just healthy, but one that also looks attractive,' says Professor Damien Walmsley, scientific adviser to the British Dental Association.
'This isn't surprising; a healthy, attractive smile can make you feel more confident and improve your quality of life.'
At the same time, the ability of dentists to help patients have the aesthetically-pleasing smile they desire has also increased, thanks to the constant evolution of modern treatments and technologies.
'As well as helping patients achieve the appearance they want, these breakthroughs are also helping nervous patients feel more confident about undergoing treatment and are reducing the pain that some treatments used to involve,' says Professor Walmsley.

Oral hygiene

Keeping a lovely smile starts with good oral hygiene.
Toothpastes today are extremely effective. Most now contain fluoride, which is a chemical that strengthens the teeth and protects against tooth decay.
But now scientists at the University of Newcastle may have found a more natural alternative.

Can seaweed clean teeth?

Microbes found on seaweed have been found to produce a special enzyme, which cuts through plaque, even in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth.
Dr Nicholas Jakubovics of Newcastle University's School of Dental Sciences says that seaweed toothpaste may be more effective than traditional versions, and the team are now planning to develop a paste, mouthwash or denture cleaning solution that harnesses seaweed power.
Another breakthrough that will be welcome news to the millions of people who need fillings is a high-tech plasma brush developed by engineers at the University of Missouri in the US.

Pain free fillings

Human trials are now underway for the instrument that promises to make fillings of the future pain free by using chemical reactions to disinfect and clean out cavities for fillings.
The procedure takes around 30 seconds and the chemical reaction strengthens the tooth, making the bond with the filling material more durable.
Dentists could be using the technology as early as next year.
'There have been no side-effects reported during the lab trials, and we expect the human trials to help us improve the prototype,' said Qingsong Yu, associate Professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the University of Missouri.

Latest techniques

Tooth whitening

Tooth whitening is becoming one of the most popular aesthetic dental treatments in the UK and it has come a long way since it was first introduced.
Latest techniques include using lasers to activate a bleaching gel, which lightens the teeth.
The procedure usually takes approx 1 to 2 hours, depending on the level of staining.
Dentist Dr Mervyn Druian, director at the London Centre for Cosmetic Dentistry, who counts former PM Gordon Brown among his patients, says that techniques are evolving all the time.
'Using a warm gentle thermal diffuser, raising the temperature of the bleaching gel very gently, has proved in my experience to be the most effective way of bleaching teeth in the dental practice. It's a very comfortable, relaxing procedure.'

Titanium implants

And for the six per cent of all adults have no teeth at all, titanium implants can now restore a full smile.
Although titanium implants have been around for decades, the adhesives used to fix the teeth onto metal have moved on leaps and bounds.

Mini implants

Mini implants, which are much smaller than traditional ones, are proving to be a solution for patients who would not normally be able to have implants at all.
'Today patients with poor quality bone and even diabetics, who take longer to heal, can be helped by mini implants, as opposed to the full-sized ones, which are more invasive,' says Dr Druian.
'However, while these developments are exciting, it remains key that we do not lose sight of the importance of the basic rules of good oral health,' advises Professor Walmsley.
'Brushing twice a day, visiting the dentist regularly and avoiding sugary food and drink between meals.'

What to avoid

Sports drinks and energy drinks

Keeping a lovely smile starts with good oral hygiene.
These may give you a boost, but they could be seriously damaging the enamel on your teeth, according to a US study published in a recent issue of General Dentistry.
After only five days of exposure to sports drinks, enamel was already damaged.
And energy drinks caused twice as much damage to teeth as sports drinks.

Smoking

As well as staining the enamel of teeth, smoking can lead to gum disease and damage the bones supporting the teeth.
'If you smoke, you will damage your teeth and ruin your health. It really is as simple as that,' says Dr Druian.

Drinking too much alcohol

The risk of mouth cancer can increase by up to four times in those who drink alcohol to excess.
A study in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology found that people who drink too much alcohol are three times more likely to suffer from severe gum disease compared to those who only drink occasionally.
According to the British Dental Health Foundation, the risk of mouth cancer can increase by up to four times in those who drink alcohol to excess.

How to Get Healthier Skin

When meeting someone new, most people take notice of the person's face first. For this and other reasons, maintaining clean, healthy skin is paramount to self-esteem, confidence and even attitude.
Getting healthier skin is not contingent upon high-cost prescription medications or obsessive skin care routines. Modifying your daily routine a tiny bit and upholding disciplined cleansing habits can help to add flawless skin to the list of your best qualities.
Eat healthier...
By avoiding foods that often make your face breakout, your skin will be less oily and more resistant to blemishes. Some problem foods that may cause pimples or breakouts include chocolate and other candy, French fries, fast food, pizza and soft drinks.

To get your skin in better shape, you may not have to give up everything that has negative effects on your skin, but rather, eat those things in moderation. Enjoy greasier foods as a special treat or on rare occasion when eating a healthy, balanced meal is out of the question.
Hydrate and exercise...
Drinking the recommended eight glasses of water per day coupled with some regular exercise - walking, running, bicycling, engaging in sports - should have a great impact on one's complexion. Increased blood flow due to aerobic exercise will positively impact one's complexion with a glowing look to replace dull skin.

Not only will exercise and drinking water help skin tone and texture, but it will also make you feel more energized and even better about yourself. By keeping your body in shape, you will feel less stressed and more capable of achieving those things you set out to do.
Monitor sun exposure...
By using a moderate strength sunscreen, you will be protecting your skin from sun damage, skin cancer, aging and premature wrinkles. Too much sun can blister one's lips, leaving them red, sore and charred. Sunburned skin will eventually peel most times, leaving skin areas blotchy and sensitive. The best approach to preventing sunburn and other sun-caused skin problems is to monitor how much time one spends in the sun and to avoid sun exposure by using sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater.

Practice a regular cleansing routine...
Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and moisturize...this daily routine should carry you on your way toward healthier skin. Select a gentle skin cleansing solution that works for your specific type of skin - dry, oily, normal. Using your selected product, cleanse face in a circular motion and rinse with lukewarm water, as hot water zaps skin's moisture.

Follow the cleansing stage with an exfoliant. A granular product is often especially effective in smoothing rough areas and releasing dead skin cells, allowing the face to be better moisturized.
After the exfoliation process concludes, use a toner or an astringent to tighten skin and remove any makeup or cleanser residue. A nice alternative to a toner or astringent would be doing a facial masque at least once a week, which tackles clogged pores while also firming skin and leaving it soft and silky.
Finally, pat skin dry with a soft towel but do not dry up all the water. Apply a moisturizer (with or without sunscreen) to help protect skin from dryness. Those who have oily skin do not have to moisturize as often as those who have dry, normal or combination skin.
By following the daily skin care routine along with drinking lots of water, exercising and protecting your skin from sun damage, you should soon notice positive results. Maintaining discipline and adhering to your goal to achieve healthier skin make the actual task at hand so much easier to accomplish.

How to Clean Your Skin and Remove Makeup with Natural Oils

I think we have all heard the myths that you need to remove oil from your face in order to have clean, radiant, youthful looking skin. I, myself, have always thought that using a strong facial cleanser and toner would make my skin breakout free and easy to maintain. However, it seemed like finding the right face wash is a lot harder than it seems, especially when you want to try everything new that hits the market.
After using everything the beauty counter offered and having nothing work the way the label read, I decided to go a more natural route using oils to cleanse and moisturize my face.
It seems pretty silly doesn't it? I never thought I would be rubbing my entire face and neck with a combination of several natural oils and having it actually work better than any over the counter cleanser has before. To say that I was skeptical seems an understatement, but after finding out that using natural oil is actually pretty beneficial and can remove dirt and makeup more easily than commercial soaps, I thought I would give it a try. Plus, a lot of the facial cleansers I have had artificial ingredients in them that I wasn't so sure was good to be putting on my face in the first place.
There are many variations, but the one I used and that worked well for my combination skin was pretty simple and inexpensive. I think it's a great jumping off point. As you continue using this method, you can easily add more oils to suit your needs, but here is the simplest way to get started.
First you need good cleansing oil. My choice was castor oil. You can find this in any drugstore.
Second is to find a good moisturizing oil. I decided to use "sweet oil". Again, you can find this at any health or drug store. Another good oil is olive oil or grape seed oil. Jojoba oil is also very nice and is the closest to your skins natural oil, but I also found this to be the most expensive and harder to find.
There are many different brands of oils, so it's really up to you to decide which ones and how much to spend. I recommend getting something that isn't too expensive, but also not skimping and buying the cheapest ones. I paid about $4 for each oil.
The process is pretty easy. You need to only apply a few drops of each oil in your hand and then apply to your face and rub in. There is no need to take off your makeup. The oils do a fantastic job of removing even the most stubborn of eye makeup, including most mascara. Let it sit in for a few moments and then rub off with a warm washcloth. This step takes a little patience and time, as you will need to re-moisten the cloth and let the warm water melt off the remaining oil several times to ensure you remove your cleansing oil mixture.
I thought for sure that I was going to feel like an oil slick after using this, but I didn't. I did break out with some bumps after using this, but be aware that this is your skin purging away all the trapped dirt and unless it becomes irritating and you suspect a negative reaction, this should only last a few days.
If you feel the need for a separate moisturizer, you can simply add a drop or two of your moisturizing oil to a clean cotton ball or pad and rub it over your face for added softness and moisture.
Voila: a simple, natural cleanser that is easy on the pocket book as well as your skin.
