Greasy hair is the result of the excessive production of sebum, which is an oil secreted by the scalp’s sebaceous glands. Sebum plays an important role because it provides a protective coating for the scalp and hair, and it prevents moisture loss due to exposure to the sun and heat. While sebum is necessary for optimal hair and scalp health, too much sebum can leave the hair looking greasy, limp, and flat.
Luckily, fixing this problem is quite simple. There are dozens of oil-control shampoos available, many of which contain tea tree oil- an ingredient that regulates sebum production. Most of the time, the results provided by these shampoos are immediate. The only drawback to oil-control shampoos is that many of them are not recommended for color-treated hair. For treating extremely greasy hair, it may be necessary to use a medicated shampoo. Instead of tea tree oil, these shampoos often contain pyrithione zinc, coal tar, and other “heavy duty” ingredients.
Another product that is easy-to-find, cheap, and effective is probably in your kitchen cupboard or refrigerator right now- baking soda. Baking soda not only absorbs odors (which is often a problem for those with greasy hair), but it also absorbs oil from the hair and scalp. For best results, simply fill a salt shaker with baking soda and sprinkle a tiny amount onto dry hair and massage it into the scalp.
Alcohol is another ingredient that has the ability to fix greasy hair. While baking soda absorbs oil, alcohol has the ability to dry oil. Since many styling products have a high alcohol content, using these products can provide a temporary solution. Unfortunately, overusing these products will cause the scalp to secrete more oil in order to replace the oil that has been lost. Because of this, using an alcohol-rich product to treat greasy hair should only be done sparingly. While this may not be a permanent solution, it is useful when you need a quick fix to rid yourself of greasy hair, such as for a night out on the town or when attending an important function.
While these methods are effective for treating greasy hair, keep in mind that they are only temporary solutions. If you suffer from a severe case of greasy hair, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist who may be able to suggest a prescription-strength product that can provide you with a permanent solution.
