If you have a new baby, if you are working long hours, if your social calendar is jam-packed, then you understand how chllenging it can be to get up in the morning. Imagine how your complexion—often overlooked during life’s busiest times—feels. Stressors have the ability to show up on your face in the form of dullness, dryness, wrinkles and acne. Here are seven dermatologist tips for energizing that weary skin.
Tip #1: Make It Up Until You Remedy It
It can take time to snap life back into sluggish skin. While you wait, use a concealer, such as Dermablend Quick-Fix Concealer, and blush, such as YSL Blush Radiance, to temporarily even out your skin tone. Enliven tired eyes with a lengthening mascara. Try: Lancôme Hypnôse Doll Lashes.
Tip #2: Exfoliate (and Then Exfoliate Again)
Cells can pile up on skin, making it appear rough, splotchy and dull. Using a gentle facial scrub a few times a week can help polish away the extra skin cells to reveal a fresh and glowing complexion. Try: Kiehl’s Milk, Honey and Almond Scrub.
Tip #3: Super-Treat Skin at Night (or at the Doctor’s Office)
“A nighttime regimen of alternating a retinol product and a glycolic treatment can get rid of dullness,” says dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner. Try: SkinCeuticals Retinol 1.0 and Mario Badescu Glycolic Skin Renewal Complex. Or, if dullness persists, Gerstner says to supplement at-home care with occasional in-office peels.
Tip #4: Go Bright
Age spots or hyperpigmentation can contribute to the appearance of weary skin. To downplay them, Gerstner recommends looking for skin care products containing illuminating ingredients, including vitamin B3, vitamin C3 or chestnut seed extract. Try: L’Oréal Youth Code BB Cream Illuminator.
Tip #5: Moisturize
Sometimes skin needs more hydration than your trusty face lotion can provide. When your complexion looks or feels parched (once a week is a good rule of thumb), coat it with a thick moisturizing mask and let it sit for at least 10 minutes before tissuing off or rinsing with lukewarm water. Try: The Body Shop Vitamin E Sink-In Moisture Mask.
Tip #6: Wake Up Skin From Within
Nowadays you’ll be hard-pressed to find a beauty product that isn’t infused with antioxidants, like vitamins A, C and E. To give these ingredients an extra boost, dermatologists advocate snacking on fruits and veggies that have high levels of antioxidants. The brighter they are—think berries, black grapes, papaya, peppers and spinach—the better they are at fighting skin-damaging free radicals.
Tip #7: Get Zen
Research shows that slacking on your zzz’s and increased levels of stress hormones in the body can lead to skin inflammation and an acceleration of wrinkles and acne. So take care to treat yourself well to look your most radiant. “Eight hours of sleep a day should be your minimum each night,” says Gerstner. “And when possible, add meditation or yoga to the mix.”
