Everybody's lips are different -- lips range from bow-shaped to downturned and come in a rainbow of shades. While each person's pucker varies -- and you will have to mind what works well for your particular lips as you apply lipstick, liner and the like -- some nearly universal tips and tricks help highlight lips of virtually all shapes, hues and sizes.
Step 1
Exfoliate your lips every other day. Simply scrub them gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush or clean washcloth and then apply a lip balm. Exfoliating helps keep your lips moist and conditioned, which is essential for an appealing look.
Step 2
Dab powder foundation around the border of your lips before applying liner, gloss or lipstick to bolster the contrast between your lips and skin, making your lips appear more full.
Step 3
Fill your lips in completely with liner before adding lipstick. This lends your lips plenty of definition and also keeps your lipstick from fading. For a more traditional liner application that also emphasizes your lips, edge your lips with a natural liner after you apply lipstick or gloss. Use the side of the pencil and make short strokes to avoid a harsh look.
Step 4
Apply lip gloss in conjunction with lip liner to give thin lips a plumper look. For more formal occasions, go with glossy or sheer lipstick, which, like lip gloss, reflects light to lend lips a fuller appearance.
Step 5
Blot your lipstick. Apply a light layer of matte lipstick and then blot it with a soft tissue. Apply another layer, and blot again. Repeat the process until you're happy with the shade. Layering in this fashion helps deepen the color of your lipstick and draw attention to your lips. Once applied, dot a little gloss right in the center of your upper lip to catch light and provide the illusion of fullness.
Step 6
Finish your lipstick with a light coat of lip balm, preferably balm with mineral oil or petrolatum, to lock in moisture and give your lips a healthy, lasting and eye-catching sheen.
Step 7
Simplify the rest of your makeup. To avoid an overdone look and put your lips at the center of attention, accent your look with neutral eyeshadow, a few coats of mascara and light eyeliner.
